Tadoba: Introduction

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, one of Maharashtra’s largest national parks, has become a popular destination for tiger sightings due to its well-developed infrastructure of Gypsy Safaris. The reserve, spread across 1727 sq km, includes Tadoba National Park and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. Named after a chieftain named Taru who lost his life to a tiger, the reserve features a shrine in his honor. The diverse landscape includes hills, dry deciduous forests with teak and bamboo trees, and various lakes sustaining a variety of wildlife.

Animals such as sloth bear, Indian leopard, nilgai, and numerous bird species inhabit the reserve. The region also hosts reptiles like Indian monitor lizards and snakes. With dense forest zones, bamboo areas, grasslands, and wetlands, the reserve is a haven for birdwatching, boasting approximately 195 bird species.

To ensure the safety of tigers and local residents, the forest department has implemented measures such as relocating villages from the core of the forest and providing employment opportunities, including roles as safari guides and drivers. The department also promotes waste management and eco-friendly practices, encouraging the use of glass bottles instead of plastic.

Various recreational activities, including kayaking, a butterfly park, boating at Irai Lake, adventure park, loghuts stay, cycling with forest guides, nature trails, tent camping sites, and camera rentals, enhance the visitor experience while contributing to conservation efforts.
