Behind The Bamboo
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve
Once again at Tadoba on a Safari in Alizanza! This time we were enveloped in a light mist. Breathing in the fresh morning air, the smell of the forest and our senses so alive, ready to behold what the jungle has in store for us. Fifteen minutes into traversing the forest we spotted a tiger cub that soon disappeared into the grass. Suddenly again we could see just the top of the tigers back.
The occasional alarm call of the deer and movements in the bush was enough to keep us alert and wait patiently. What a beautiful sight to see the sunrays break through the canopy. To our surprise we saw a bamboo bush move incessantly, it looked possessed. This movement would stop and then start again. The truth was behind the bamboo there was a kill and the cubs were feeding on it. The tiger cubs would stroll through the grass and we were so excited to have glimpses of them. Truly like the cat walk they each revealed themselves. It took us a while, we did not know if it was the same cub or another cub.
Now you could feel the warmth of the sun. As all the gypsies were lined up next to each other. There was a hush banter between us. Children got excited about children in the other gypsies and a beautiful camaraderie begun. Soon are stomachs were rumbling. It was total multitasking, trying to make less noise, get breakfast going, keeping an eye for any movement, listening to alarm calls, identifying birds high up in the foliage….
What a thrill it was to see the cubs playfully leap on each other and make their way to the water hole. They disappeared just like they appeared. For us it was a wonderful game of patience with heightened anticipation. Finally, the tigress majestic as ever had a drink of water and decided to cool off at the water hole. Through the trees we could see the cubs playing. They came one by one, greeted their mother and quenched their thirst.
These cubs worthily stole all four hours of our Safari. We came back loaded with pictures, brimming hearts and a new tale to share.
